Duke Street Healthy Bodies Project 2010
biglotteryfund.jpgFollowing a recent successful bid for £10,000 funding from the Big Lottery Fund (Awards for All England), Duke Street Primary school will use the funding to improve their existing outdoor areas. During the summer break they will be installing trim trail equipment, developing an allotment area and a sensory garden. This will enable the school to offer a range of new outdoor activities designed to improve the health and wellbeing of pupils at the school. This adds to the newly installed trim trail equipment provided by the School Parent Association.

Sports Day Thursday 1st July

 Today is Sports Day.

7.45 am update: Sports day is ON.

10.35am : Sports Day still ON at the moment. Light rain falling since 9.15am but due to recent fine weather, this could soak away or dry up really quickly if the rain stops.

11.35am: Sports Day is still ON. We are confident that unless there is is a massive deterioration in the weather situation, we will be able to go ahead with Sports Day. (A decision on whether we will do the sprint finals today will be made later on.)

We are aiming for an early start time of 12.45pm, in order to complete events by 3.15pm. For those of you who haven’t attended a Duke Street Sports Day, the children will be grouped into 12 teams which participate in 8 different activities during the course of the afternoon.

You will be able to follow your children, (from a safe distance!) as they move around the circuit of activities. The afternoon ends with the sprint finals, the heats of which will have taken place prior to the day itself.

Miss Goodwin has enlisted the support of a large team of helpers from Southlands High School to assist in the running of, what has become a very enjoyable afternoon of sport. For health and safety reasons all children will be brought back to school to get changed prior to being released to parents from the children’s usual classrooms.

Drinks stations will be in place, though extra water may be advisable in water bottles. A sunhat and putting sun cream on in the morning is also advisable should there be a heat wave. There won’t be any chairs set out for spectators as you will be moving round to follow your children but if anybody feels they need to be seated, they may bring their own folding chair.

Should the event be in doubt due to poor weather, parents are encouraged to check the school website, where possible, for an update.

Science Week 2010

p1020978_small.jpg

This week the children have been experiencing Science Week.  This was an opportunity for the children to learn about Science in a fun, creative way.

It was finished off with an assembly led by Mrs Anderson, who had organised the week.   This was an opportunity for children from each class to share their favourite activites.

Please look at the slide show featuring some of the images shown during the assembly.

Safer Internet Day - 9th February 2010

Parents and teachers are being encouraged to help change children’s online behaviour to mark EU Safer Internet Day 2010. At school we will be raising the profile of e-safety for the children and teaching  them how to stay safe online.

The initiative – which sees events taking place across Europe – encourages internet users of all ages to think about how they are using the internet and what they can do to stay safe. Within the UK, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre, the national Centre for child protection, is spearheading activities and launching new resources to raise awareness and empower children and young people.

Research by Ofcom shows that 78% of 5-7 year olds are now using the internet, so learning about online safety is as integral as learning to cross the road. One of a number of resources that are being launched to mark Safer Internet Day 2010 is ‘Lee and Kim’s Adventure’ – a brand new interactive animated cartoon for 5-7 year olds  from the CEOP Centre.

Children can follow the adventures of Lee and Kim and understand issues such as cyberbullying and talking to strangers on the internet, whilst parents and teachers can use additional resources to help their children understand an easy code – Zip It, Block It, Flag It – part of the Click Clever Click Safe campaign, launched by the Government last year.  Throughout Lancashire, schools, local authorities, safeguarding children’s boards and the police have been working together to raise awareness of online safety and in particular Safer Internet Day, resulting in a number of activities taking place.

Helen Penn, CEOP’s Head of Education explains more: “Younger and younger children are using the internet to talk to family and friends and to play games. By helping them to develop safe online behaviour from an early age, we can ensure that our children are fully equipped with the understanding and knowledge they need to stay safe.

“The theme of this year’s Safer Internet Day is ‘Think before you post’ and we would like to encourage everyone to do just that – do you really know who you are talking to? Is it really sensible to post that photo of yourself on your social networking site? By changing children’s online behaviour and educating them from an early age, we not only empower them with the skills they need to stay safe, but also deter those offenders who seek to harm children online”.

 Tips for parents:
  • Teach Childnet’s SMART rules to your children or come up with your own and stick them up near your family’s computer.
  • Set up “favourites” on your web browser and show your children how to use them.
  • Talk about what your family does to steer clear of viruses.
  • Use a family email account for signing up for things online or shopping online.
  • Mobiles and games consoles generally have inbuilt safety features for children, ask the retailer about them.
